Overview

An Indian pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai, with its corporate office and R&D centre in Thane, a second R&D facility in Concord, Canada, manufacturing plants at Ambernath, Satara and Pithampur, and a regulatory office in East Windsor, USA, needed its server room converted into a walkway without losing a single minute of network uptime. Network Techlab redistributed a 42U rack into five 12U racks on custom-fabricated stands and re-routed 250+ connections in just 3 days.

The Requirement

The client planned to reconstruct the existing server room and convert the space into a walking pathway for goods delivery and employee movement between two sections of the facility.

The room housed:

1 × 42U server rack
1 × 27U media rack
Approximately 250 user end-to-end network cable connections

All of it had to move while the business kept running.

The Challenges

Scale. Two large racks and roughly 250 live user-end connections needed identification, dismantling, relocation and re-termination.
A live environment. Any break in connectivity would directly affect day-to-day operations across the site.
A 3-day window. Cable mapping, dismantling, shifting, re-termination, testing and commissioning all had to fit inside it.
Commercial exposure. Given the volume of existing cabling, a full rip-and-replace would have carried significant cost.
Space. The new layout could not encroach on the walkway the client was creating.

Our Solution

After surveying the site, Network Techlab presented the client with multiple options and recommended redistributing all devices from the single 42U rack into five 12U racks, mounted at suitable heights and positions within the same area, each with spare capacity built in for future expansion.

Complete inventory of all existing devices and data points
Detailed rack elevation design
Walkthrough of the proposed arrangement with the client before execution
Phase-wise implementation plan with defined cut-over points
Structured cable management, dressing and labelling
Testing and commissioning of every relocated connection

Custom-fabricated rack mounting stand

Mounting five 12U racks safely without narrowing the new walkway was the core engineering problem. Network Techlab designed and fabricated a custom mounting stand rated to carry the full load of each rack and its installed equipment, while holding the clearance needed to keep the pathway fully usable.

How We Executed It

Work was sequenced around the client’s production schedule rather than the other way round. Cables were identified and tagged before any dismantling began. Devices migrated group by group instead of all at once, and each segment was tested and brought back online before the next was touched.

The assignment called for detailed planning, sound network and structural engineering, and close coordination with the client’s operations team.
